Dodgers news: OF Carl Crawford strains his right quadriceps
As the Los Angeles Dodgers began their 2014 spring training on Wednesday, outfielder Carl Crawford suffered a strain to his right quadriceps, according to Mark Saxon of ESPNLosAngeles.com.
After the Dodgers 4-1 loss on Wednesday to the Arizona Diamondbacks in their Cactus League opener, Crawford told team trainers that he felt tightness in his right leg. The 32-year-old had misplayed a line drive hit that resulted in a triple and also slid awkwardly into second base.
The injury to Crawford is a cause for concern for Los Angeles as he had dealt with leg injuries for most of last season with the team. He had initially
missed 30 games due to a strained left hamstring, and was touch-and-go with his hamstring as he missed games throughout the season to keep himself from getting injured again.
As for this current injury, it’s one that manager Don Mattingly knows he must be careful with given his history of injuries and that there are only 19 games left this spring training.
“We don’t feel like this is anything that’s going to linger, but it is part of the process with Carl,” Mattingly said. “With only X amount of games, we know
we’ve got to kind of be careful.”
Last season, Crawford played primarily as the Dodgers lead-off hitter and batted .283 with six home runs, 31 RBIs and 15 stolen bases. With that said, Los
Angeles will have to continue to monitor the veteran outfielder closely as he is an important part of the team. Crawford is currently in the fourth year of
a seven-year, $142 million contract that he signed in December 2010.
